So recently our account manager Lucy was put in the unfortunate position of having her laptop bag with allllll of her things stolen, and it spurred me on to focus a post on how she’s survived without and replaced her tech since…
So, to set the scene: The team were at a great event hosted by Microsoft for all their Cloud Champions (of which we are now one!) where we were presented with an award for “Cross Selling” (yes, we know it sounds like “Cross Dressing” and we are tempted to make the changes to the award..)
After the event, to celebrate our win, she went out for a drink with some other partners – which is when it happened. On getting up to leave she’d noticed it had gone!
After blagging her way back to where she was staying by appealing to the good nature of the ticket inspectors and taxi drivers of London, the process of finding her tech began. Here’s the tips she picked up from her experience:
- Windows Phone users:
You’ll know we’re windows phone users, and, with this great tool you can track down, lock and erase all the data on your phone from one portal – here’s what it looks like.
- Laptop
Although in this situation, Lucy was lucky enough to have had her laptop recoverered from the thief by the police, the threat of losing a laptop by either misplacing it or by theft can be devastating. Not only is the financial loss tough to get over – laptops aren’t cheap after all – but the loss of personal files, documents, photos and other data can be even more upsetting. The hefty price tag on your laptop is probably dwarfed by the value of the information on it.
It can also be potentially very dangerous, as any criminal who snatches your laptop could then have access to your email or online banking accounts, which combined with other personal data on your laptop, could make identity theft really easy. Think about the things you have on your laptop right now: Countless photos, financial records, software, music, videos, etc.
The cheapest and most reliable tool we’ve found so far is Gadget Trak dramatically increases the likelihood of finding your laptop, by pinpointing its location, and even sending a photo of thief.

- Software
Sometimes, and more often than not, the most valuable thing that can be lost along with the laptop itself is the software and applications on it. Make sure you have a copy of all the activation codes of the software you have installed, as most software titles are generic and can be re-downloaded, the valuable part is the actual code! If your code has run out of uses, depending on the vendor, you can give them a ring and have it reactivated for more use if you explain the situation.
The risk of loss of data stored in that software is one of the reasons businesses and individuals move to cloud based tools. Fee free to get in touch with a member of the team to find out about how you can move today (01453) 827899 or hello@expressware.co.uk
I hope this post helps for you to proactively sort out your tech before that fateful day when something you’ve learned to rely on goes missing- in the meantime, in the words of the scouts, always be prepared! Thanks for dropping by…
